Welcome to this weeks 920 Weekly Roundup! Officially this is the last week of winter for the year and we have already noticed daffodils popping up everywhere, so let’s see what we’ve been talking about . . .
A recurring theme we keep seeing in the ICT sector is gap between men and women. This evident in the amount of women working in ICT, especially the number working in senior management roles. A while back Yahoo revealed that only 37% of its workforce is female and that 77% of their leaders are male. This isn’t just the case with Yahoo though, Google diversity data showed that women only make up 30% of employees in Silicon Valley. Recently, The NZ National Business Review published an article Who Ate All The ICT Bonus Pie? They state that ‘Male IT staff in New Zealand receive 50% more in bonuses than their female colleagues’. But is the ICT gender imbalance due to culture or nurture? Ryan Holmes founder and CEO of Hootsuite argues that both play a part. The typical ‘bro’ culture of IT start-ups can alienate women from the workforce and there are also very few women applying for tech positions. This goes back to high school level with less than 1% of high school girls expressing interest in majoring in computer science at University. So how can we change this? This is something that we will look into in the upcoming weeks!
We love this article that shows you 6 different ways to prove that you’re a superstar at work!
1. Be first, but with a purpose
2. Master a specific – and valuable – skill
3. Create your own side projects
4. Put your effort where your mouth is
5. Show a little of your personal side
6. Work harder than everyone else
Our very own Nathan Masters has been posting some interesting and relevant content over on his blog regarding contract recruiters. So far Nathan has discussed, inheriting contractors, working with your colleagues that are in the permanent space, picking up contract roles (and the questions you should be asking!), working a contract role (with speed and accuracy), and rates and negotiations.
Enjoy the last official weekend of Winter 2014!
