920 Weekly Roundup – 3 June

Welcome to this week’s 920 Weekly Roundup! Let’s see what’s been in the news this week..

Facebook are introducing a new rang of emojis to their Messenger service which are said to ‘better reflect gender and skin tones’. Designs of women across different roles will be released in the future; this round of new emojis will include a female officer, runner and swimmer. In a post, Facebook stated that “we’re diversifying the genders to create a more balanced mix that’s more representative of our world”. People will also be able to choose the skin tone they wish their emojis to appear as. This update is due to be released today.

Still have a MySpace account from back in the day? Well you might want to delete that account as 360 million MySpace accounts have gone on sale online last week. This includes passwords, email addresses and usernames that were obtained in a hack during 2013. MySpace has since disabled the affected passwords. However, this shows how important it is to make sure you use different usernames and passwords for each of your online accounts. Otherwise it makes it easy to take stolen credentials and use them for other accounts. Best to delete that MySpace account you don’t use so no one can obtain any of your personal information either!

Two medical practices in Blenheim have opted to allow patients to manage their healthcare online. At the moment the portal allows patients to book medical appointments, in the future they will also be able to order repeat prescriptions. By patients booking online, it also reduces the amount of phone calls for the medical practices. Patients are given a choice of signing up to the online service, meaning those that aren’t so tech savvy can still book appointments the usual way. Using the doctors’ discretion, some patients’ medical results will also be available on the portal. With the same level of security as internet banking this could be a great move for the medical profession.
