920 Weekly Roundup

Welcome to this weeks 920 Weekly Roundup! Let’s see what we’ve been talking about this week . . .

Anzac day tomorrow celebrates the 100th year since troops arrived in Gallipoli. With dawn parades and services being held all over the country, Australia, Gallipoli and many other places around the world, it is a time to remember and be thankful to those who fought for our country. It is also a time for learning and the new app Nga Tapuwae Gallipoli, released by the First World War Centenary Programme (WW100), gives virtual tours of the Anzac battle locations, historical images, soldiers’ stories and tips for visiting Gallipoli.

Earlier this month 920 sponsored and attended the Wellington Startup Weekend. The weekend was a great success with 87 participants in 12 teams and with the winning team, Housitlook, being offered a business deal! The Startup Weekend is where entrepreneurs, developers, and designers can get together to form new businesses in a 54-hour marathon of inspiration, perspiration, collaboration, and fun. It’s organised and run by a great team of volunteers and we can’t wait to be a part of the next one!

This week Googles deadline for websites to be mobile-friendly went into effect. The requirements included sites being readable on mobile phones and having compatible software, if sites don’t meet these requirements they will be bumped down Google search rankings. This is the most significant change Google has made to its mobile search rankings but the new formula won’t affect searches on desktop’s and laptop’s. While the change shouldn’t affect too many big companies as they already have mobile sites that meet the new standards, this will affect small businesses who rely on foot traffic direct from mobile browsing.

For the first time Facebook has completed a statistical breakdown on how Kiwi’s use the site. Previously we’ve been lumped in with Australia but Facebook is taking our market more seriously and is putting in more investment. The results showed that 2.5 million Kiwi’s use the site each month, with it being most popular for students under 25. The most popular category is Entertainment, followed by Food & Recipes and News, although the most shared category relates to news – Causes & Crises.

Although Facebook is hugely popular, LinkedIn is still the way to go when it comes to careers and networking . . .

We hope you all have a great Anzac weekend!
