More businesses turning to the cloud

Cloud computing is becoming increasingly ingrained in our lives. Roaming credit card payments use cloud servers to process transactions, and everything from our emails to our music is stored away from our devices to reduce the burden on storage. In the same way, businesses are finding it more tempting to start using the cloud to benefit their enterprises.

Cloud-based processes have now taken off on a global level, and business decision-makers are forecast to spend significantly more money on adopting the technology.

This is the result of research released this month by International Data Corporation (IDC). The IT specialists found that cloud usage is primed to explode over the next four to five years.

IDC discovered public IT cloud spending is set to reach $56.6 billion this year, making it important for employers to recruit experts in IT jobs to prevent their investments going to waste. What's more, this will more than double over the next few years to reach a whopping $127 billion by 2018.

This translates to show that cloud-based applications are set to grow by almost a quarter (22.8 per cent) every year over the next four – around six-times quicker than the overall IT market. At which point, public cloud services will make up for more than half of all global server, software and storage expenditure growth.

Senior Vice President and Chief Analyst at IDC Frank Gens unpacked these statistics further: "Over the next four to five years, IDC expects the community of developers to triple and to create a ten-fold increase in the number of new cloud-based solutions," he explained.

"Many of these solutions will become more strategic than traditional IT has ever been. At the same time, there will be unprecedented competition and consolidation among the leading cloud providers. This combination of explosive innovation and intense competition will make the next several years a pivotal period for current and aspiring IT market leaders."
