3 tips to ace a video interview

Are you ready for a video interview?

Video interviews are becoming more common in the recruitment process, adding an extra element of pressure to what's already a nervous event for some. However, they do serve an important purpose. For example, if you're based in Auckland and have applied for a job in Christchurch, you might not be able to find time to travel down there – especially if you're still working another job.

Alternatively, you may be applying for IT jobs in another country. Whatever the reason is, if you're searching for IT opportunities further afield, there's a high chance you'll be invited to a video interview. Here's what you need to know.

1. Get your tech sorted

Sure, you're an IT professional, but remember you're relying on a number of technological forces, many of which are out of your control. Global Skype outages, local internet problems or even unfortunately timed power cuts can all add extra unnecessary tension.

Ensure you have contingencies in place if tech issues arise.

The key is to prepare contingencies that provide valuable support in the above situations. Leave your laptop plugged in and charging just in case, and, if possible, connect it to your modem or router with an ethernet cable to ensure your internet connection is stable.

2. Bring an office environment to your home

There's likely to be a temptation to only dress up the part of you that you intend to be on camera. What eases the nerves like a suit jacket up top and jandals down below?

It's a great idea in theory, but what happens if you have to get up to get something or you need to adjust your position halfway through? One wrong move and the professional illusion is shattered.

You need to apply the same level of attention to detail to your surroundings as well. If your home doesn't have a space set aside as office, try to find somewhere neutral that looks neat and tidy to use as a backdrop. Avoid having a window in the background, as back lighting will ruin the shot and make you hard to see.

Try and make your environment look professional.Try and make your environment look professional.

3. Treat it like a face to face interview

Just because you aren't in the room with your potential employer doesn't mean that everything you know about the interview process goes out the window. It's still essential to research the company beforehand, make eye contact with the interviewer and prepare questions to ask them.

However, one bonus to this process is that you can keep notes on screen or nearby to guide you along – just make sure you aren't obviously distracted by them during the call.
