Job interviews require candidates to behave in a professional manner.
It's an unfortunate reality for people searching for jobs that sometimes they will miss out. While most of the time it could be as simple as not quite having the right experience or qualification, other mistakes may seem trivial, but can ruin your chances no matter how good your CV is.
Recent research from The Creative Group found some of the main reasons for candidate rejection, with all of them being necessary for jobseekers to keep in mind. The following tips are useful for many facets of professional life, from addressing managers at work to approaching IT recruitment agencies, as they encourage good skills to keep in mind for the workplace.
According to the firm, the behaviour most likely to see candidates miss out on opportunities is checking or answering mobile devices during an interview. Up to 77 per cent of the hiring managers who took part in the survey would turn down an applicant if they observed this during the interview process.
Next on their list is arriving late without acknowledging it. This is an important distinction from being tardy with a legitimate excuse, indicating all is not lost if unfortunate events lead to you missing an appointment time by a couple of minutes. According to The Creative Group, 70 per cent of respondents would not give candidates another chance if they were late without good reason.
Finally, failing to bring items that the interviewers requested would also result in 70 per cent of hiring managers turning down your application. This mainly because it shows a lack of dependability and reliability. If you can't handle simple tasks like supplying a CV, how will you survive the workplace?
"Job seekers should do everything they can to tip the scales in their favour, including paying attention to the smallest details," advised Executive of The Creative Group, Diane Domeyer.
