Market Update

by Nathan

This year has been an interesting one to be in recruitment to say the least. The IT market has been tough and has even seen some IT Recruiters exiting the industry. Due to a great team and plenty of drive and determination Ninetwenty thankfully has not been one of them and we can now see real reasons to feel optimistic about the IT industry in 2010.

Recently we have seen an increase in the amount of vacancies appearing, especially in the permanent space, but there is still a way to go from where the marketplace was back in 2007 / early 2008.

At the IT Management level things are still extremely competitive with many roles getting over 100 – 130 applicants. From an organisation’s point of view they are obviously spoiled with choice and have the ability to bring people on board with a wide breadth of knowledge and experience. Within the last two months however we have seen a surge in demand for Business Analysts / Systems Analysts across the public sector which is encouraging given that the public sector has generally been relatively quiet in 2009. On the development side there is still the need for experienced .NET / MOSS Developers as well as the need for Java / J2EE Developers.

The Auckland marketplace also seems to be rather buoyant as is the Hamilton marketplace. Specifically there has been an increase in the demand for contract resource in the Project Management, Business Analyst and Microsoft Development space.

In 2010 we expect that there will be additional demand in the SAP space with some significant projects going on in Auckland and Wellington. We also expect to see a trickle down effect from all the current activity in the Business Analyst space, with current projects seeing a pick up in infrastructure support positions next year. From a 920 point of view we are in fact growing and are up to 12 staff in Wellington and in 2010 we also hope to grow our Auckland team.
